The Design Museum’s Barbie exhibition, in partnership with Mattel and marking the 65th anniversary of the Barbie brand, features over 180 dolls showcased alongside an array of accessories from the Barbie universe.
The exhibition explores Barbie’s changing appearance in relation to evolving cultural shifts around diversity and representation. See a rare first edition doll, a talking Barbie prototype, the first Black, Hispanic and Asian Barbies and an astronaut Barbie (in the likeness of Europe’s first female commander of the International Space
Station, Samantha Cristoforetti) that has actually been into space.
Don’t forget the rest of Barbie’s world; there are the Dreamhouses, her first car and camper van and dozens of original outfits. Friends of Barbie also feature, including her first friend Midge and younger sister Skipper. There’s also a whole section dedicated to Ken, which will see six decades’ worth of Ken dolls on display, and an original costume worn by Margot Robbie in the 2023 Barbie movie.
