Barbican Art Gallery launches Dirty Looks: Desire and Decay in Fashion, a major new fashion exhibition challenging what is beautiful.
In a world of glossy, manipulated perfection, dirt and decay have been used to defy the conventional standards of beauty; think ripped, stained jeans, mud-splashed evening gowns and the concept of upcycling. Dirty Looks explores the resurgence of this idea in young designers’ work and what it means.
The exhibition features fashion icons including Hussein Chalayan, Alexander McQueen, Vivienne Westwood, and Maison Margiela, alongside emerging designers such as Elena Velez, Yuima Nakazato and IAMISIGO.
Note: This exhibition includes some nudity, explicit language, references to drug use and some flashing images. For guidance on where these references are in the gallery, please speak to a member of staff.
