Part shop, part art gallery, part museum and 100% labour of love, welcome to the neon Narnia that is God’s Own Junkyard.
Star of several fashion shoots, music videos and magazine covers, God’s Own Junkyard holds the largest collection of neon in Europe and one of the biggest in the world, with 80% of it for sale. It’s a family business with a glowing London history (sorry!); founder Dick Bracey made the iconic original Soho signs for Ronnie Scott’s, Bar Italia and the Raymond Revue bar neon, with son Chris (aka The Neon Man) responsible for much of Soho’s distinctive saucy signage in the 70s.
The 80s saw a move into film work, and you can see items from Bladerunner, Superman, Beetlejuice, Mission Impossible, Interview with a Vampire, Christopher Nolan’s Batman and The Dark Knight, Tomb Raider, Iron Man, Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, Casino Royale, and Eyes Wide Shut on display.
God’s Own Junkyard is now run by Chris’s wife and sons, all neon artists in their own right. It’s a remarkable place for a wander, and a genuine part of London history. On-site licensed cafe/bar The Rolling Scones serves up a menu of drinks, brunches, burgers and hot dogs, or afternoon tea served on delicate bone china.
Open Friday-Sunday; check the website, as it is sometimes closed for private events.
