Pelicans have been resident in St James’s Park since the first birds were gifted by the Russian Ambassador in 1664.
The pelicans are free to roam but tend to stay near the lake; sociable by nature, they will often settle down on park benches next to visitors (which can be hilarious if the aforementioned visitors are not expecting it).
It’s surprisingly meditative just watching the pelicans swimming around on the lake and catching fish but the real action is watching them being fed, which happens around 2.30pm next to Duck Island Cottage.
