December is here. For most of us that's a month of Christmas markets, twinkling lights and going out slightly too often. Here are our favourite things to do in London this December 2024, taking you from festive indulgence to New Year's Eve frolics. On the lookout for something specifically Chistmassy? We'll soon get you in the mood for carol singing and mulled wine! Winter by the River (previously known as Christmas by the River) With stalls selling food, drink and perfect stocking fillers as well as artisan gifts, you can enjoy the stunning city and riverside views while you stroll through the market. Voted the nation’s best Christmas market for a first date, it’s got full-on festive romcom vibes; plus you can amble around with a mulled wine in hand, no judgement. Club Curling at King’s Cross Channel your inner Winter Olympian with Club Curling at King’s Cross. There’s an alpine vibe this year and six multi-coloured, sustainable curling lanes with sessions from just £9.00 per person and a bar featuring an installation of neon signs and lights from the legendary God’s Own Junkyard. Great fun for both mates and dates, it’s also the perfect activity for families to get into the holiday spirit as children under 12 play for free when accompanied by an adult. Njinga Santa Cycle If you love cycling, Santa and charity, then this is the event for you. All rolled up into one festive and feel-good event, you can join a casual cycle of 18km dressed as everyone's favorite Christmas gift-bringer and deliver presents to the children at Shooting Star Chase Children's Hospice. You have to register to participate but it's free—and you must wear a Santa suit and come with an unwrapped gift for a child if you're joining in. Ally Pally Christmas Not a location to let a celebration pass it by, Alexandra Palace is back with its winter carnival taking place over three weekends. As well as festive treats like illuminations, the Wizard of Oz on ice, comedy from Adam Kay and Santa's grotto, there's an outdoor ice rink; check out our favourite outdoor skating venues for more ideas. Gingerbread City Gaze in a mixture of wonder (and hunger - no Hansel and Gretel vibes please) at the structures created by a whole host of architects and engineers in a showstopper that would knock Prue and Paul off their feet. Created by the Museum of Architecture, the display is an fascinating and intricate creative scene which is well worth exploring. Southbank Centre Winter Market The South Bank is fairy-lit and lovely all year round, but it’s a particularly good spot if you want to avoid the hectic hordes of central London High Street shopping for something with a lot more charm from the cute little Alpine chalets. It's also part of a whole festival with a range of events including some fabulous illuminations. Christmas Carols in Trafalgar Square If you're looking for a sure-fire way to feel festive for free, head over to Trafalgar Square any evening between the 9th and 24th of December. With more than 40 carol groups serenading the square to raise money for charity, it'll have you feeling all Dickensian in no time. New Year's Eve Fireworks Tickets for the grand annual fireworks display sell out incredibly quickly; don't worry if you haven't got tickets though, there are plenty of free places with great views of the show!
