Themes of hope, empathy, human connection and a celebration of iconic cultural figures will be played across stages in Tower Hamlets this autumn, with the return of the acclaimed Bangladeshi theatre festival, A Season of Bangla Drama.
Now in its twenty-first year, the festival will run from 1 to 24 November. This year’s theme of hope is fitting for the festival’s coming of age in times of tumult and uncertainty. Championing new writing and providing a platform for debut performances, this year it showcases 16 plays which both capture the spirit of the age and are relevant to diverse audiences.
The emergence of key sub-themes such as climate and the corruption of power are balanced by more positive forays into human connection and a celebration of iconic cultural figures. The youth element provides a generational balance, and wider art forms such as music, dance and movement provide a multi-dimensional sensory experience.
Cllr Kamrul Hussain, Cabinet Member for Culture and Recreation, said: “A Season of Bangla Drama reminds us of the power and positive influences of art, literature and poetry. With a focus on the need for connectivity and empathy, especially with more marginalised sections of the community, we hope you can make the most of this varied and meaningful month-long festival.”
The festival incorporates a fringe programme of events including exhibitions, talks and walks, with something for everyone to enjoy.
