The Ainu are an indigenous people living in Hokkaido, northern Japan, and the surrounding area and islands. Rather than focusing on their history, this exhibition is a rare chance to experience first-hand examples of Ainu culture as it exists today, including personal stories of members of the community of Nibutani, in Biratori.
An extensive events programme will be led by guests from Nibutani, including workshops and performances of song, dance, cookery, crafts and language. The exhibition also traces the story of 19th-century British explorers whose legacies still live on in the region today – a little-known historical link between the UK and the remote region of Biratori.
