Looks Delicious!

Foodie alert: don’t miss your chance to see this fascinating exhibition of shokuhin sanpuru – the skilful and startlingly realistic food replicas seen in front of restaurants across Japan.

Rarely seen in the UK, each of Japan’s 47 prefectures is represented with a food replica specially commissioned from the world-leading manufacturer Iwasaki Group. Dishes range from Okinawan goya chanpuru (bitter melon stir fry) to the indigenous Ainu ohaw (soup with salmon) from the northern island of Hokkaido.

Originally made from wax but now more commonly made using PVC, the process is incredibly detailed, with each item being made to order for an individual restaurant. The craft has evolved far beyond a mere marketing tool for restaurants; lifelike food replicas can be found on everything from keyrings to phone cases, with some items available from the gallery shop.

There’s even an interactive zone in the Gallery where you can create your own bento box of fake food, plus free craft and cookery demonstrations, workshops and talks on Japanese food culture.

Entry is free. You are advised to book a ticket in advance but you can take a chance and just turn up; allow up to 45 minutes to go round. Tickets are released on a weekly basis, two weeks in advance of the ticket date.

Organisers may cancel events, alter schedules, or change admission requirements without notice. Always check official sites before heading to an event.
