‘Bamboo as Method’ at Somerset House

Free

The new courtyard commission at Somerset House is ‘Bamboo as Method’ by artist Zheng Bo.

In stark contrast to the urban setting of Somerset House and the fast-paced, hyper-connected lives of most Londoners, visitors are encouraged to immerse themselves in a garden created from over 300 locally-sourced bamboos and spend some time in the contemplative, creative act of drawing.

There are ten different species of bamboo arranged in alcoves with seating. By scanning a QR code you can hear Zheng’s voice guiding you through choosing one type and sketching the unique characteristics of individual leaves on biodegradable paper, creating a real connection with the artist and, in turn, the work itself.

The drawings will then be composted into the soil to fertilise the garden – completing a cycle of creativity and ecology.

Organisers may cancel events, alter schedules, or change admission requirements without notice. Always check official sites before heading to an event.
