Celebrate Pride with a wander around the We Are Queer Britain exhibition after work; they are open until 8pm on the third Thursday every month, with a volunteer-led guided tour at 7pm.
Their website explains the positive meaning behind their name: “‘Queer’ has long been a term of abuse for LGBTQ+ people, but it is being reclaimed. Younger people, especially now, embrace it proudly as their identity, and universities use it in an academic sense. We call ourselves ‘Queer Britain’ because ‘Q’ is the most inclusive letter under the LGBTQ+ umbrella, and we want to be part of the conversation that helps remove the last of its sting.”
They have a new pop-up exhibition, presented with the LGBT+ veterans charity Fighting For Pride, which explores the stories of those whose lives were devastated by the ban on gay people serving in the Armed Forces. Being gay in the British military had been illegal and gay service members were stripped of their medals and dismissed on the grounds of their sexuality.
Browse the literature in their free Book Nook then drop by the gift shop on your way out; all purchases support queer makers/producers and the museum itself.
“It’s a museum for anyone to learn, to understand, and accept what it means to be LGBTQ+ today, and we are both delighted to support Queer Britain as Patrons” Elton John and David Furnish.
