Lion Vibes Selektor Thursdays
The music scene in Brixton has historically attracted a global ethos and a renegade mindset. Lion Vibes is a record shop and a good one too. But that’s not all. Selektor Thursdays is an open DJ night where anyone brave enough can show off their reggae knowledge on the turntables. Join the gentle bounce of skanking reggae heads for free, and get on camera on their infamous Insta feed.

Upstairs at The Ritzy
A long-standing cultural hub of Brixton and a picture house downstairs showing independent films. The Upstairs at the Ritzy series showcases all types of music, from live gospel to reggae to DJs. Feel the vibes and the history for free, but expect slightly pricey drink prices.

Hootananny
In 2023 Hootananny became a non-profit social enterprise, run by and for the community. The line-up reflects its positive outlook and community spirit. Everything goes; some of the best DJs in the world have played there, as have the cutting-edge of new talent. Prices are cheaper before 11.30pm and there is often food cooked outside from 6pm, so arrive early and take your time to get into the groove.

Corsica Studios
Back in the late 90s, Corsica Studio’s founders ran renowned amazing roaming parties. They eventually made a permanent home in the early 2000s under two railway arches in Elephant & Castle. The quality of their programming is both progressive and hip. You are guaranteed a good night and an authentic London favour of multiculturalism and musical and energetic openness. There’s live music in Room 1, and an amazing Funktion 1 soundsystem in Room 2 for a deep dance experience. The earlier you book the cheaper the ticket.

The Birds Nest
A buzzing music scene has grown around Deptford over decades. The Birds Nest is an ages-old and hugely celebrated live music venue that is also a pub, restaurant, and hostel. Live music from folk to hardcore punk and blues to ska, as well as known bands with mostly free entry. Good place for a Sunday roast too.

Open Doors at The Southbank Centre
The Southbank Centre hosts hundreds of events year-round featuring everything from internationally acclaimed musicians to grassroots poets. Their Open Doors series is free and includes a jumping Afro Beat night and The Creative Encounters sessions. During the sessions, you can listen to live music and try hands on creative challenges such as drawing, poetry or craft making; the perfect place to meet like-minded souls.
